Patterns on an isometric grid

This time I used one of Samira Mian’s excellent tutorials on YouTube. It’s number 42 in her channel. The process of drawing the grid was fun in itself, although hard on the eyes! Some of the Alhambra designs I was looking at before are done on these types of grid and I wondered how they were created.

So, first off was constructing the grid. I did exactly as the tutorial said and used a radius of 3 cm. It was a bit of a challenge towards the end to get the lines in the right place but I did get into the swing of it. I was a bit out in a couple of places but was relatively pleased with my accuracy. I do wonder about trying to do something with a smaller radius in the future.

I then picked out a few of the patterns from the grid onto tracing paper. These are the ones recommended but I’m sure I could go back and pick out a few more myself.

I then transferred my designs onto paper and coloured them.

This is the first one that I did…perhaps my favourite one. I didn’t leave quite enough room on the paper, a point of one of the stars disappears off the edge!

On to the next pattern. The colours I chose meant that this one ended up looking pretty christmas-y. I also made a mistake in the tiling and ended up with diamond shapes where I think there should be hexagons. Oh well.

Not that excited about this one.

On to the third pattern. I like this one, it has quite a contemporary feel and I’m back in the realms of my favourite colour combinations.

I’m still not happy with my watercolour technique…more practice required!
