My daughter got into crochet recently and I bought her a kit to make a blanket. I saw that the same company had a macrame kit for making Christmas Fairies, they looked pretty simple so I thought I’d give it a go. If they were successful, I thought I could give them away as gifts.
The kit came and I got stuck in. However, it soon became obvious that what was in the kit didn’t seem to be what had been used in the adverts. In particular, the macrame rope was much thinner than shown in the picture. This meant my first attempt ended up looking skinny and dishevelled (I also hadn’t quite got the hang of the knots…which also didn’t help).

Not a roaring success. More Miss Havisham than a christmas fairy.
So. Firstly I got on to YouTube to have a look at how to do the knots. How did anyone learn to do knots before YouTube? I then thought about how I could deal with the fact that the rope was too thin,
In the end I used double the amount of rope for the body and hair…instead of three strands, I used six. I used three strands instead of one for the arms and plaited them to make them hold together.

Finally I used one pipecleaner to make some wings and another to secure them to the body and make a coloured belt (pipecleaners weren’t in the kit).
The results were much more satisfying.

For reference, the kit is the Little Fairies macrame kit, from Wool Couture.
