Surrealism beyond borders at the Tate

I’m not a huge fan of surealism generally but I did enjoy this exhibition at the Tate Modern. I guess that’s the good thing about having a membership, going along to things I probably wouldn’t choose to go to see.

Series of paintings by Eugenio Granell, living in exile from Spain in the Dominican Republic, Guatemala and Puerto Rico. I love these for their graphic style and vibrant colours.

I was immediately drawn to the colours in this…then I got up closer and really had a look! Still rather like it. Painted by Malangatana Ngwenya drawing on his experiences in Mozambique during the fight for independence from Portugal

Wish I’d take a note of the artist. I *think* it’s a Japanese artist.

Everyone’s idea of surrealism…the lobster phone by Salvador Dali

I really liked this series of paintings by Remedios Varo. I wouldn’t have called them surreal myself, more fantasy.

More information on the exhibition is on the Tate Modern website.
