On a recent trip to an art supplier (I love going to art supply shops!), I picked up an acrylic pouring kit. It is half term this week and the weather wasn’t great today so I decided to get the kit out and give it a go. My daughter joined me as well. The kit only came with one small canvas but I’d bought another just in case this might happen.
Despite being a kit, there weren’t any instructions…obviously I’m not really an artist so I like instructions. I had a quick look on YouTube to find out what kind of techniques you could use. I had relatively small amounts of paint so I didn’t really want to waste them with complete experimentation (see, not a real artist). I decided to try a “dirty pour”, basically, putting the paint into a cup and then upending that on the canvas.

We got a couple of cups and started putting the paint in. We were really unsure how much paint to put in so probably used too little in the end. We up-ended the cups on the canvas and then started tipping it to move the paint around.
Both of us found it quite hard to get the paint to the edges of the canvas, used too little paint. We both ended up having to add more in puddles and swirls and then try to merge that in. It is quite satisfying watching the paint run about. I’m glad we have a glass table though!
The final part was to drop on some silicon gel, which also came in the kit, to form “cells”. It’s easy to overdo it so we fought our instincts and didn’t go overboard!

The finished results are pretty satisfying. It’s interesting how differently they came out. They are incredibly wet though so I imagine they are going to take a really long time to dry. There’s also still some paint left, enough to make a small piece.
Really satisfying. And really easy to make something interesting with basically no talent!
