Having finally managed to make my macrame plant pot holder, the next job was to make a wobbly plant pot to go in it.
I wanted to try to make something a little more rounded than I’ve made in the past. I started with coils and quickly realised that wasn’t the right way to go so went back to pinching. I was using a much larger ball of clay than I usually use for pinching and my hands are quite small so I was finding it challenging to make the rounded bottom that I wanted.

I came up with the idea of using a steel bowl and a ladle. The steel bowl helped me to get started on rounding out the bottom of the pot and then I took it out and used the ladle to push out the bottom of the pot to get the rounded shape I wanted. Working with the pot in the steel bowl was also nice as it allowed me to spin the pot as I worked with my hands. I soon had quite a pleasing rounded shape and left the pot to dry.

A week later the pot was ready to paint and I put on a couple of layers of white paint. The finish of the pot is quite rough and this is accentuated by the paint…the flaws stand out. However, I actually quite like it like this, as opposed to a smooth flawless finish. The nice thing about hand building things is those little nicks and dinks and finger prints…it’s obvious it’s hand made.
I’m really pleased with the rounded shape I managed to achieve. I also decided that I’d leave the pot white instead of using any fancy paint finishes. The plant and the macrame are going to be the stars here.

The last thing to do was to try it out in my hand made plant holder.
I’m really pleased with it.
Next up is a trip to the garden centre to choose a good plant to go in it.
