Popart linocut trees

The inspiration

Behind the Tate Britain gallery, there’s these really oddly pruned trees. I’ve noticed them before but on my way to an exhibition in February, I took a photo of them against the cloudy blue sky

I’m quite a fan of “naked” trees. I quite regularly take pictures of them when I’m out and about in the winter or early spring as I love how the shapes are exposed when the leaves are missing. However, the trees beside the gallery weren’t completely natural in their shape.

The construction

The linocut was pretty simple. I drew out one of the trees and then transferred it to the lino using tracing paper. I painted some paper with acrylics…paper curled a bit….oh well. Then printed on to each. I experimented with different roller sizes to get the ink on…hence the three rollers.

The consistency of my paints was a bit variable. The green panel in particular came out a bit streaky. I was hoping for more solid blocks of colour. The orange, blue and red worked better.

The finished article

I’ve stuck all the prints onto a larger sheet and I’m hoping to frame it and put it up at some point.
